The Saturday theme here at CourtneyTuttle.com is a ‘make money online’ case study of a HowToMobile.com, which was started on June 6th of this year. The site is brand new this month! I basically work on the site during the week, and update you on its progress every Saturday. This was a very eventful week.
This week the stats were pretty crazy at HowToMobile. Between June 15th and June 21st (which is a one week period) the site had 817 unique visitors and 1,451 page loads. To give you some perspective, during the previous week (June 8 – June 14) the site received exactly 100 unique visitors and 155 page loads. Feel free to take a look at the stats if you would like. Google Adsense Revenue
The site got it’s first Adsense clicks this week, and made a total of $4.14. Most of that was during the last three days, so I think it’s pretty safe to say the site is already over a dollar a day. I didn’t have the 300×250 rectangle ad in the posts for part of the week, so that definitely had somewhat of a negative effect.
$4.14 was pretty low for the amount of traffic the site got this week. Part of that was that I didn’t have the rectangle ad in there for part of the week, and part of it was that my ads didn’t match up well until later in the week. It should be pretty easy to make the Adsense revenue jump up to 3-5 times what it was this week.
So far I have written two posts, and have literally stuffed them full of long-tail keyword phrases. (Long-tail keywords are longer keywords that have little or no competition) Most of the keywords people have found me with have 3-6 words. There is absolutely no use in trying to target keywords like ‘cell phones’ and ‘mobile phones’ at this point.
Both posts are about one specific mobile phone model – the Motorola Krzr K1m. They are detailed lessons that show people how to connect the model to their computer. Very few sites are explaining that sort of thing in detail, which is why I was intrigued with the idea.
My traffic strategy for this site is to continue to post detailed lessons that are stuffed with long-tail type words. I also found some people in forums that were searching for this information, and provided them links to the material – I will continue to do that quite a bit because it worked out really well. This week I’m going to focus primarily on getting new, good material on the site. I confess that I have somewhat of an advantage with a cell phone site – I sold cell phones for a while and know what questions people tend to ask. (In this case I’m assuming that if they used to ask me they will ask Google.)
A Potential Problem
I am really having a hard time figuring out how I’m going to organize HowToMobile. There are more than 10 different cell phone manufacturers that I want to cover and each will probably have at least 10-20 phones that will be really important. I really want people to be able to easily find their phone and I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the issue. I know that I’ll find a solution for my organization problem, but don’t know what it is yet. It definitely won’t be like a regular blog where all of the posts are organized into general categories.
Overall Thoughts At This Point
At this point it feels like any other new site – I’m mad that it only made $4.14. It’s such a mental game for the first few months. Luckily I’ve been in this situation before, so I know that the site will do really well, even though it isn’t happening as quickly as I would like. I’ll be mad about the site’s earnings for 2-3 more months and then it will take off. I’m so glad that I’ve been through this process before – a lot of people don’t make it to profits because they quit before they get over the traffic hump that plagues every new site.
I find myself being both happy and mad at HowToMobile’s progress. I’m excited that it’s getting good traffic, but am mad that I’ve probably made about $0.10 an hour for the work I’ve put in so far. If you’re in a similar predicament, draw from my experience that has taught me that if I keep going, solid profits will come. I’m excited for the day when I sell HowToMobile because I’m going to be making bank.
