Step 1: Learn The Basics Of Starting A Blog
Setting up a blog is VERY easy and most people can do it in 10-20 minutes by following the setup video in step 2. Some people do get stuck and if that happens to you, contact me via live chat (at the bottom of the screen) or email and I’ll help you to get it right. I help someone out almost every day so don’t hesitate to ask.
You have to make two decisions before you start your blog:
- What domain name you want to use.
- Where you want to host your blog.
Choosing A Domain Name
As you can see, the domain name of my blog is theblogbuilders.com. It’s my blog’s address on the web. Whether you’re in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia, or anywhere else I would HIGHLY recommend using a .com name (as opposed to a .co.uk or other country extension). You want your blog to have a global audience and .com is THE global domain name.
Choose a .com name that you like and you’ll be good to go!
Choosing A Web Host
Web hosts are online services that store your blog and allows visitors to access it. The host you choose matters a LOT. Some people go with free hosts or crappy hosts and hope to have a good experience. No no no! If you don’t start with a host that’s reliable, you’re going to have to pay people to fix your blog when your host screws up.
I have tried many hosts and prefer Bluehost over all of the others I’ve tried (FatCow, Host Gator, 1 and 1, HostNine, GoDaddy, Host Monster) because they are super reliable and have 24/7 support via phone, email, or chat (critical). They also make it really easy to set up a blog.
Because Bluehost is really awesome, they are usually a little more expensive than most other hosts. Fortunately for you, I was able to negotiate a huge discount for people who use this guide. If you follow any link in this guide to Bluehost, you will get about a 43% discount on your hosting, making it less expensive than the cheapies. When the discount is activated, you should see $2.95/mo. (this is the 36 month breakdown) on your screen when you get there! You’re welcome – you’ll be paying less than I do.
Once you have your web host, setting up a blog is simply a matter of a few clicks, as you’ll see in my setup video, where I walk you through the entire process of creating your blog:
